October 27th

We had a short quiz on graphing using a table of values and finding slope off a graph.

We practiced graphing using tables of values and using our math sense to figure out which numbers would be the most helpful to get rid of fractions.

HOMEWORK

Graph the six equations using a table of values
Find the slope of the graph
See if you can see a pattern between the slope and the graph.

I also handed out an interim now that we have completed our first test.  Please get it signed and return to me or have one of your parents send me an email to let me know they've seen it.

Have a good weekend.

October 26th -

Slope and solving

Slope = rise / run

Remember to start at one point and work your way towards the other point  to make sure your signs are right.

After break we started looking at solving.  We needed a bit of a refresher from grade 8, so did some questions from the board solving equations with one variable.
HOMEWORK:
Slope workbooklet - all five pages

Questions from the board:

  1. x + 7 = 15
  2. 2x + 3 = 15
  3. 3x - 7 = 14
  4. 2 + 3x = 17
  5. 5x + 14 = -1
  6. 16x-6x + 10 = 0
  7. 4x = 8
  8. -2x + 7 = -3
  9. -4x + 12 = 0
  10. -4x + 3 = 3x - 11
  11. -7x - 3 = 2x - 4
  12. -5x + 3x - 1 = 2x + 10x
  13. -3x + 2 = 4x + 1
  14. 121x + 13 = 115x +14
  15. x/2 + 3 = 5

Overall marks so far - see copy on classroom door to see what is missing, or you can stop by to see me, call or send an email for more info.

October 24th

Lots of definitions today:

x-intercept - where the graph crosses the x-axis and y = 0

y-intercept - where the graph crosses the y-axis and x = 0

Linear graph - straight line graph

Non-linear graph - not a straight line graph

Linear equation - has one or two variables and each term has a power of 1

Graphing equations - we have looked at two methods so far...

  • making a table of values
  • finding the x-int and the y-int

HOMEWORK

first two pages of homework

October 19th

Today we learned some new terms:

Relations  - two things are connected (like relatives ;) .  We can show this relation in ordered pairs, tables or graphs.

Interpolate

Extrapolate

We looked at ways that tables, ordered pairs and graphs can be used to show different relationships

  • # tickets to the play Usher are $5 each.  We made a table of values showing # tickets sold and total cost.
  • # minutes cell phone use to cost for the phone can be used to determine if this is cheaper for you than buying a monthly plan
We looked at different graphs to determine if it made sense to join the line and make it continuous.

We started looking at  equations and making a table of values, then graphing the ordered pairs.

Homework:

Worksheet:  1a, 2d, 3ac, 4,5,6
Workbook: pg 12, 13, top 14, top 15.

We also did a notebook check.  Looking good everyone!

October 18th

Start of Unit 2 - Linear Graphing and Solving

Some definitions you will need to know

We learned that there are three different ways to show the same information.  We can use a table of values, ordered pairs and graphs.  Later in the unit, we will learn a fourth way to show information.

You need to do to the end of Page 5 for homework.

Test Day tomorrow!

Yes, it's a big one.  We are going over EVERYTHING we have learned so far.  The test will be similar to the review you did in class today.  I will be collecting the review as requested in order to give you the incentive you say you need to get it done.  I have given you the answers to make sure you are doing it right.

You are all amazing and will all do well on this test.

Tuesday 11 October 2016

Oct 11th

Today we did more work with combining polynomials.  I will be collecting the worksheet about Ray as well as the four questions from the board:

(x+5)(x+3)
(x+5) + (x+3)
(x+5) - (x+3)
x +5(x+3)

I also gave you a review to start working on for your Unit One test on Friday.

October 6th

We had a quiz this morning to review exponents after reviewing yesterday's homework.  See yesterday's notes below as a reminder.

We reviewed the terms for polynomials.

We learned how to multiply binomials.

You will need to hand in questions 1-18, showing your work.

October 4th

Nice work today!  We worked on some really tricky exponent questions.  Here are all of the rules (short cuts) again:

Here is the homework for today.  Come and see me for an answer key if you would like one.

2 a b f
3 a b e f
4 b c f g
5 a c e
6 a c e
